  2. 484 - Chessboard

    Chess board made of tooled leather and folds like a book. Inside is a backgammon board. Penciled letters inside read "JWN' underlined wit the price of $1.50. When unfolded the board is 13 inches square. Printed on the side is "History of Asia" to appear like a book when on a shelf. This is reported to be the chess board in use by Officers at Niagara when the War of 1812 was declared.

  5. 73.51.1 - Painting

    Oil painting of a Grimsby Beach scene, done by Mr. Cecil Carrick. Scene shows houses and a fir tree. In the foreground is a leafless tree standing in a small green area. The scene is taken at the intersection of Phelps Avenue and Grand Avenue. The frame is gold, painted over in a pale grey color. Engraved around the inner part of the frame at each of the four corners. Measures 24 1/2" x 10 18".

  6. 749.1 - Pitcher, cream

    Quilted yellow satin glass cream jug with pewter lid and clear glass handle. Measures 4 1/2" high, 4" diameter at mouth. Found in Gough Lodge which belonged to Dr. John Clark, "The Bootblack Orator", of the Methodist Camp, meeting grounds in Grimsby.

    Quilted yellow satin glass sugar bowl, (lid missing), 3" x 4 1/2". Both found in Gough Lodge which belonged to Dr. John Clark, "The Bootblack Orator" of the Methodist Camp, meeting grounds in Grimsby.

  8. 76.81.1 - Quilt

    Crazy quilt made of silk and velvet. The pieces of material were originally part of the clothing of the John Adolphus Nelles family. The centre piece is the tie worn by John Adolphus Nelles when he attended a Ball, held in Hamilton, to honour the Prince of Wales in 1860, later King Edward VII. There are some worn and some torn pieces.

    Cream box with design of silver broken lines. Bottom of box has 3/4" diameter hole to facilitate pushing cards out of box. Printed on lid of box in blue "Ryrie, Birks, Ellis, Toronto", and within a square is a lion rampant. Box is stained.

    Brown leather shoe with canvas lining. Leather leaf and flower design with silver coloured metal bead in centre on toe. Shoe has cloth bound strap coming from back of heel to which is sewn lengths of narrow, black silk ribbon, presumably for the purpose of tying aroung child's ankle. Leather soles with size "2" imprinted in sole.

    Wedding dress c 1910. Heavy oyster satin wedding dress, but renovated to wear for evening and is now in two pieces. Made into evening dress in Edmonton, Alberta. (a) Skirt is gored, with overlaping panel in front. Has back opening with 4 press studs and 2 sets of hooks and eyes. Satin is cut in parts. Measures 38 1/4" in length and 11 1/2" at waist.     Brown velvet evening coat with fur collar and cuffs. Sleeves are balloon shaped from elbows to wrist and are inset with cinnamon colored ribbon. Coat is lined with amber or rust colored satin. One large button fastens with velvet loop. Button is citrus colored and circular in shape. At back of coat are two strips of velvet appliqued on hem. They are perpendicular and measure 10 1/2" x 1".     Black velvet evening coat with white sealskin collar and cuffs. Fully lined with oyster satin. Sleeves are very full from elbow to wrist and made pouch-like with a line of ruching. One velvet covered button. No maker's label. Measures 43" neck to hem, 26" inside sleeve with sealskin collar. Overall, measures 67 1/2" x 8". Coat belonged to Miss Mary Burnham, c. 1930's.

    Pair of child's armlength hand-knit woolen mittens. There are several holes in them and they come from the Manson family. They measure 27" long, 2 1/2" wide and the length of the thumb is 4".

    (g) KETTLE: Copper and tin. Handle and lid missing. Base is made to fit into top of stove. Measures 3" in diameter across the top. Base is 3" in diameter. Inner base (part made to fit into top of stove) approx 2 1/8" in diameter. Spout is 1 3/4" long.

    Silver plated footed cup on black enamelled stand. Cup engraved with "Hamilton Specator Challenge Trophy, Grimsby Beach Shuffleboard Championship". Attached to the cup are 5 metal shields.
